For a burgeoning business owner, social media can often be your best friend or your very worst enemy. It’s a free and practically limitless source of advertising and revenue, but only if you use it right. But only ten percent — a very small fraction of your overall posts — should be a direct pitch or offer. You need to vary your posts in a way that will be informative, interesting and unobtrusive. Finding this balance is key to keeping your audience interested in your brand, without being overwhelmed.

2. Engage with Your Audience

Social media isn’t a machine you can wind up and walk away from. If you really want to make it work, you need to actually get involved with your followers. Don’t just send out three tweets and call it a day — find a conversation and get involved! Make yourself a resource to the people in your network, answer followers’ questions, and make some new connections! You can even search for discussions around relevant hashtags to find topics that your customers are talking about and chime in.

But be careful. Interacting with your customers or potential ones in the wrong context can turn them off for good. For example, visiting a website that covers your industry and answering questions on an online forum? Great idea! Spamming a friend’s personal Facebook page by posting a link to your website in order to push your services? Not a good idea.

3. Don’t Just Wing it: Make a Plan

It’s easy to treat your business’s social media the same way you treat your personal accounts, but in order to actually provide value to your business page followers, you have to post with purpose. You should create objectives that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound, or S.M.A.R.T.

Thanks to a growing number of enterprising Silicon-Valley-ers, there are now more tools than ever to keep your social media efforts streamlined and on target. With over 10 million users, Hootsuite is currently the biggest player on the field, but other apps like Buffer, IFTTT and plenty of others offer free or cheap social media management.

These tools allow you to track analytics to see which posts are popular with which demographics, helping you fine tune your messaging to appeal to more audiences. Overall, tools like these help you monitor and measure your social media efforts, so you can see which of your S.M.A.R.T. goals is working out for you, and which ones are flopping.

It’s easy to disregard social media as an unnecessary frill on your marketing strategy, but that would be missing out on an enormous opportunity. Over 78 percent of consumers reported that posts by companies they follow impact their buying habits. That’s an overwhelming majority of consumers who are open and ready to your social media marketing, if you do it right. Put in the time with the right tools and you can start seeing big results, and just maybe have a little fun in the process.
